Horticulture Research Station, Devihosur

The Horticultural Research Station, Devihosur was established by UAS, Dharwad in the year 2000 near Haveri. With the formation of Horticulture University, the station was transferred to UHS, Bagalkot during Nov-2008. It is situated in Northern transitional agro-climatic zone (zone-8) at 140 47′ N latitude and 750 21′ E longitudes at 563m above MSL.

The station is situated in the heart of famous Byadgi Chilli growing tract of Karnataka and is just 25 km away from Byadagi town where biggest chilli market in the entire Asia is situated.

The station has 38.25 ha area. The soil type is black with medium depth. The annual rainfall is 700 mm.

The mandate crops are chilli, onion, garlic, coriander, fennel and fenugreek.

Achievements:

 

  • Work on genetic purification of Bydagi Kaddi, Byadagi Dabbi and Sankeswar chilli varieties is nearing completion (Picture – 1 and 2).
  • Work on dual-purpose high yielding chilli hybrid with high colour and oleoresin content is in progress.
  • Breeding for resistance to major pests and diseases in Byadagi chillies has been initiated.
  • Application of NAA @ 150 ppm at flower bud formation and fruit set will reduce the dropping of flowers and fruits.
  • Application of Alachlor @ 1kg ai ha + 2 Intercultivation (30 and 45 DAT) and one hand weeding at 45 DAT gives weed control in chilli crop.
  • Integrated nutrient management studies revealed that application of FYM @ 5t/ha + Vermicompost @ 1t/ha + RDF 50% has given on par yield with 100% RDF.
  • Spraying with Ca, S and Fe @ 25, 25 and 10kg /ha, respectively increased the yield and improved the quality of chilli.
  • For the management of chilli pests, the following integrated pest management technology has been developed and recommended.
    • Planting chilli with marigold in 18:1 ratio
    • Application of 50% recommended dose of NPK
    • Application of Vermicompost @ 25q/ha + neem cake @ 2.5q/ha at the time of planting.
    • Treating seeds with Imidacloprid 200SL @ 0.25 ml/l of water.
    • For the management of sucking pests, spraying with NeemAzal @ 2ml/l or spray with neem based chemical @ 5.0ml/l water at seven weeks after planting, followed by spraying with Diafenthiuron 5 WP @ 1g/l is recommended.
  • For the management of chilli fruit borer, spray with neem based chemical @ 5ml/l. If the incidence is more then EIL spraying with profenofos 50 EC @ 2ml/l is recommended.
  • Seed treatment with Metalaxyl MZ @ 2g/kg of seeds will control the damping off in chilli.
  • Spraying Propenb @ 2g/l is recommended for the management of die-back and fruit rot of chilli.
  • Spraying copper hydroxide 77 WP @ 2g/l of water was found effective for the management of Cercospora leaf spot in chilli.
  • Spraying Carbendazim 80 WDG @ lg/l or Penconazole 5 EC or Propiconazole 25 EC @ 1ml/l water is recommended for the management of powdery mildew in chilli.
  • Seedling dip in P. fluorescence 10g/l of water followed by 2 sprays of P. fluorescence at 45 and 60 DAT and 2 sprays of Hexaconazole @ 1 g/l at 75, 90 DAT is effective in the management of powdery mildew and fruit rot of chilli.
